Рецензия на альбом Saturnian Rings от Мика Мерсера

Black CaT: Рецензия на альбом Saturnian Rings от Мика Мерсера What I like best about this isn’t just that they’ve shored up the imbalances evident on their last album, they’ve also managed to do it as a trio, with songs that are sometimes mere slips of a musical thing, yet the character of their sound is strong throughout, as their melodic blend starts to show as their own. They’re trad at heart, but it comes with natural modern ways. For a trio Doppleganger are making a big noise, with modest complexity, in which beauty and individuality ring through. Right from ‘Fear And Tears And Hope’ you find a serious solemnity operating atop a clattering beat that has a metallic sound to it, as if the drums were made of copper, the depressive Goth flair seeping out of every nook and cranny of the stooping structure. They overdo the repetition of lyrics but it’s done in a catchy way and pushes home the melodic nature of their work early on, bleeding out into the sound of some weird monks. ‘Cinnamon Yard’ is beautifully handled, with a sad flow and a mix of old and new fluctuations, as if the ghost of Psychedelic Furs had been wrapped in barbed wire and dumped in a Russian cellar with a simple naked lightblub flickers across their spectral influence. Another long song, this lulls you then propels you into the lithe and furtive ‘Buddha Is My Shelter’ which moves quickly, and sounds almost too friendly, with another infuriatingly singsong element. ‘In The Rich Of The Dying Sun’ is sweet again, and they actually sing reach in the song, not rich, an agile bass besides hazy synth and regular soft peaks from the guitar. With ‘Vivo’ the nimble guitar and clattery beat leads to a delightful, pirouetting chorus. ‘In The Box’ relaxes brightly once past the opening clumsy beats, becoming starker as the pulse grips, utilising poppy guitar with odd lyrics. Just why are Ann’s brains in a jar? ‘Out Of Rain’ moves off in a springier direction with taut synth and a rumbling, tumbling motion, with extended, dark guitar highlighting the Goth appeal, and they stay serious for ‘8&8’ in an early, pithy Goth style, everything based on slender strength. ‘I Am Not Going To Listen To You Now!!!’ has a bounding bass as the pace is upped, the words get weirder and its sense of life becomes infectious, before ‘All The Dreams Of Saturn Are Burning Me Down’ ends the album. Spacious and full of moving objects you find the jutting bass and swooping vocals reactive with sandpapered synth and a rotating beast in an unobtrusive piece that shows how their compositions work because of a simple clarity throughout. ‘Demoncracy’s Undead’ is the ‘bonus’ add-on, and gets four remixes, with Two Witches offering a mutant blur of dance spleen, Secrecy opting for understated control, Redemption trying to scoop it out and leave it shaken, while The Way Of All Flesh come up trumps making it buoyant with glowing, frizzy guitar in the best mix. An excellent record, growing more exciting with each listen, it is wholly accessible and yet often commendably strange. http://www.doppelganger.ru/press/rev_mickmercer07_en.phtml
